Best of 2006 - Records

It's that time of the year. Every one is publishing his/her personal list, and every one includes me.

Here it is, my top 15 records of 2006:

15- The Thermals: The Body, The Blood, The Machine
Obscure maniac indie/indie-punk record. None the less an inspired and inspiring, album with a lot of thought... on a facist Christian government - we don't care.

14- Figurines - Skeleton
Surprising 90's Indie rock from Danish rock band... hum, danish.

13- The Loved Ones - Keep Your Heart
The guys from The Loved Ones were involved/managing/organizing shows in Philly before you were born. And it shows on their solid Fat Wreck debut.

12- Alexisonfire - Crisis
Despite shooting a real bad video for "Boiled Frog", the song and the entire album are fierce, aggressive and intense.

11- Moneen - The Red Tree
The band's most mature effort so far, expanding Moneen's unconstructed horizons while preserving the band dynamic high/low sound arrangments.

10- Built To Spill - You In Reverse
One band is finally bringing back 8 minutes long songs with a 4 minutes guitar riff in the middle.

9- Mobile - Tomorrow starts today
Everyone has its own guilty pleasure. Just don't tell your guy friends.

8- Magneta Lane - Dancing with Daggers
All female - and sexy - Canadian trio brings back original rock and proves that MSTRKRFT can produce albums with something else than noises.

7- Set Your Goals - Mutiny!
Positive blend of engaged hardcore and pop, Bay-Area kids deliver a highly enjoyable first effort.

6- Malajube - Trompe l'oeil
Montreal indie-rockers arranged eclectic sounds in the best, most unexpected francophone record of 2006.

5- The Lawrence Arms - Oh! Calcutta!
Straight up punk record from Chicago's trio: Energetic, aggressive and a bit on the sentimental side. No worries, duel vocals won't make you look like a wuss.

4- Ignite - Our Darkest Days
After more tha 6 years of waiting, Ignite was back in 2006 with the best hardcore record of the year.

3- The Sounds - Dying to say this to you
This one came out of the left field. If by left field you mean 80's Swedish synth-pop.

2- The Bouncing Souls - The Gold Record
It's 20 years later and NJ punk veterans prove they can still deliver fresh melodic punk better than any of the youngsters out there.

1- The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America
While all college frat boys are listening to John Mayer, the real drunk/stoned party happens here. For cool kids only.

2006 wasn't so bad after all.

Y'a 2 T, 2 O mais c'est le A que vous prononces plus longtemps

I was just watching the latest blockbuster québécois, Bon Cop Bad Cop. Aside from being the biggest movie in Quebec's history (financially-wise), Louis-José Houde delivers one of the funniest scene ever.

Y'a 2 T, 2 O mais c'est le A que vous prononcez plus longtemps. Téato

A Moncton, l'eau est brune

Ok. forget about the image and just concentrate on the Lyrics.

I'm ready to pay money for that song...

L'eau est brune
À Moncton
À Shédiac est un p'tit peu opaque

À Loggieville
A pétille
Et à Scoobidoo c'est mou

J'ai demandé à madame
Pour avoir un verre d'eau
Mais c'était plus comme d'la bouette

Au Nouveau-Brunswick
Les bains c'est du Quick
Quick, quick, quick, quick ,quick, quick, quick, quick

Et à Miramichi
L'eau de bécosses
Elle est mentos et elle est choowee

Mentos, parce que c'est choowee!

With my Christmas bonus, I'm buying

  • A 32" LCD Screen ?
  • A new game console, Wii or Xbox 360?
  • A trip to the other end of the Country? (Back country heli-skiing?)
  • A trip to the other end of the World? (Yes, I can afford flying anywhere in the whole wide world)
  • A bunch load of new shoes and sneakers (I'm getting Asics Mexico 66 one way or another)
  • RRSPs? (How much not fun are those)
  • Armani Suit?
  • An brand spanking new Cuisinart Mixer?
  • A entire arm covered in tattoos? (I'm getting one, hello January 5th)
  • A new set of Bedroom furniture? (Hello bed with rods to tie girls up)
  • Down payment for Culinary Academy?
  • 2 Kilos of Pure Columbian Cocaine?

I just don't know what to get... such a dilemma.

12 Days of Christmas, Partridge and Danny Bonaduce

In the Holiday spirit - even if I am somewhat boycotting Christmas this year - here is Taking Bach Sunday, recorded on AOL Session Live.

Figured, Adam is not doing anything in this band except pointing out that birds would poop everywhere. Adam. If this doesn't satisfy your need for TBS, there's always the animated version.

Yup, 12 Days of Christmas, Partridge and Danny Bonaduce can be scary.

a catchy guitar riff

Sometimes a catchy guitar riff can take you places. For Red Jumpsuit apparatus, this mean a record that goes gold - 500,000 copies sold. For a major-debut album on Virgin, this is not bad. Especially since a lot of screamo parts have been washed out rendering a pretty bland sound that you will forget after listening to it for the 2nd time. Except for that catchy guitar riff.

Wait a minute, does the singer reminds you of someone? Can he be the adolescent version of Zac Hanson? This is a mystery someone has to look into

Even if Zac is not the singer for Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, you'll hate me for bringing back Hanson. See everything's possible with a catchy guitar riff.
